Stay Curious: Why Trying New Things Is Good for Your Mind—and Your Life

It is easy to fall into a routine. We tend to stick with what we know – our schedules, our habits, even our hobbies and interests. While there is comfort in consistency, there’s also something we miss when life becomes too predictable.

When was the last time you tried something for the first time?

Exploring new interests isn’t just about filling time or picking up a new skill – it plays an important role in keeping our minds sharp and engaged. Just as you’re intentional about planning for your financial future, it’s equally valuable to invest in your personal growth along the way.

Why New Experiences Matter

The brain is a muscle. The more we challenge it, the stronger and more adaptable it becomes. New experiences, both big and small, help create fresh connections in the brain, referred to as neuroplasticity. Over time, these new connections help support improved memory, cognitive function, and overall mental sharpness.

This doesn’t have to mean going back to school or making major life changes. Small, consistent new experiences can have a meaningful impact on your brain’s health. This could look like trying a new recipe, walking a new trail, or learning a new skill or sport. It’s less about mastering something new and more about staying open to the experience of learning.1

Keeping it Close to Home

For our clients in Central Arkansas, we’re fortunate to have no shortage of opportunities to explore. Local events like the Argenta Art Walk—held on the third Friday of each month starting at 5:30 PM—offer a great way to experience creativity while connecting with the community. The West Little Rock Farmers Market, now open every Saturday at 8:00 AM in the Breckenridge Village parking lot, is a way to try fresh, local ingredients (perhaps even in a new recipe) while supporting local vendors. In addition, many businesses in the area offer hands-on classes, from pottery to pasta making, making it easy to step outside your routine and learn something new. If you are looking for something a little more in-depth, Arkansas residents above the age of 60 can attend UA Little Rock on a tuition free basis (still must cover the cost of books, parking, and certain other fees).

I’d encourage you to take it a step further by turning a new interest into a shared experience. Inviting friends or family to join you can make the process even more enjoyable. Learning in a collaborative setting not only enhances the experience but also creates meaningful connections across all ages.

And for those outside of Central Arkansas, there are likely similar opportunities waiting in your own community. Experiences like these don’t require expertise, just a willingness to show up and branch out.

Each of these examples are a little different, but they all share something in common: a willingness to try, learn, and grow. Whether it’s a practical skill, a creative outlet, or simply a new way to spend time, these pursuits help keep life interesting – and our minds engaged.

If you’ve been thinking about trying something new, consider this your encouragement to take that first step. It doesn’t have to be a big commitment or a long-term goal. Sometimes the value is simply in the experience itself. Attend a local event, revisit an old interest, or pick up something you’ve always been curious about.
