Rethinking New Year's Resolutions

Rethinking New Year’s Resolutions

Last year I wrote about a different approach to New Year’s Resolutions that podcaster and influencer Tim Ferriss recommended. Tim replaced making New Year’s resolutions with a 60 minute “past year review” (PYR). He found a PYR to be more insightful and actionable than his previous approach of setting broad goals with resolutions.

Sahil Bloom, a successful blogger, entrepreneur, and educator recently wrote about another useful year-end approach – The Personal Annual Review.

This annual review is Seven simple questions for you to reflect upon:

  1. What did I change my mind on this year?
  2. What created energy this year? (Activities, people, or projects)
  3. What drained energy this year? (Activities, people, or projects)
  4. Who were the boat anchors in my life? (The people holding me back from my potential)
  5. What did I not do because of fear?
  6. What were my greatest hits and worst misses this year?
  7. What did I learn this year?

Here is a good summary of his use of the personal review. Sahil makes the Personal Annual review available as a free PDF. You can print it out, reflect, and answer each question. You can download the PDF here.

Sahil Bloom publishes a free weekly newsletter with over 150,000 subscribers, the Curiosity Chronicle. I have found many of his articles illuminating. He writes about the things that interest him and are helpful on his personal journey to improve and be more successful. With over 750,000 Twitter followers, @SahilBloom is also one of the most popular educators on personal development, success, and finance.

Instead of New Year’s Resolutions this year consider The Personal Annual Review.

We hope you have a happy New Year.
