How to Beat the Heat

It’s really hot outside. Here are 15 ways to stay cool.

Paul Greenberg, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and long-term editorial page editor for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette died April 6, 2021. A nationally syndicated columnist, one of his most popular columns was 50 Ways to Beat the Heat. He regularly updated the column and his suggestions.

In tribute to Paul, I thought I would share additional ways to beat the heat.

  1. Dress lightly. (Loose-fitting, light colored, cotton, or linen)
  2. Go for a swim.
  3. Have a popsicle or ice cream.
  4. Plan your activities early in the morning or after dusk.
  5. Take a nap.
  6. Take a cool shower.
  7. Pay attention to your hydration.
  8. Eat foods that are cooling. (Fresh fruit, salads, fresh vegetables)
  9. Turn off your computer. (It gives off a lot of heat)
  10. Limit alcohol and caffeine.
  11. Close your drapes and blinds.
  12. Take a walk at the mall.
  13. Try a misting spray. (Best with some drops of peppermint or spearmint oil)
  14. Check on your neighbors and elderly friends.
  15. Set out water for neighborhood pets.
